Set in the early 1980s in the small town of Qingwu, the story follows the Qi and Cao families, who have very different family dynamics. Both families welcome a new baby around the same time: Qi Shi and Cao Xin.

Qi Shi has albinism and becomes aware of her differences from an early age. She tries to fit in by drinking soy sauce and wearing wigs. Cao Xin, meanwhile, is regarded as a model child by those around him, but this reputation comes with the pressure of his father’s strict expectations.
