Today I want to talk about Pull Strings. Which is about a guy who enters the world of a comic book. I usually make my reviews longer but this one is going to be short. Because I honestly don’t have much to say about this drama. This is a comedy drama, so you don’t have to expect a solid storyline or something serious.
I Didn’t Focus On The Story
As I said before, this is a comedy drama. I didn’t really pay much attention to the storyline. Because the drama was like 80% comedy and 20% story. They fed us a lot of comedic moments from the get go. Which then makes you focus on the comedy side of the drama. You no longer want to be entertained by the story, you just want to laugh and have a good time. This is comedy, you just watch for fun and take a break from the serious dramas.
But even though I was more focused on the comedy side. I did get the feeling that the story is lacking. Some parts of the story felt rushed, some of them felt like they skipped certain dialogues or scenes. And even when the drama was about to end, I can see what was happening but story wise… I wasn’t impressed. I’ll talk about the ending very soon.
Characters
When it comes to characters, I did like the Kuai Si character. Actually, I didn’t like him, I just liked how he was behaving. And I also found his voice interesting. Everytime he talked I wanted to laugh. Because he is supposed to be a Villian but his voice sounds too soft. He’s not intimidating. And like I said, this is comedy, so the voiceover was probably done on purpose to make the character funny.
While we are talking about voices. I also liked how li changshou was switching his voice and accent when he turned into changeng. You can still hear a tiny part of changshou’s voice in changeng. Which I found impressive, because changshou is changeng. It was going to be awkward if changeng didn’t sound like changshou.
Another thing I noticed is, Pull strings is a bit like a comedic version of fate chooses you. Because both guys are very powerful but they hide their powers. They don’t want people to know about their power levels, they don’t even want to take credits for their actions.
Pull Strings Ending
So now I want to quickly wrap this review up by talking about the ending and the story. From the beginning till around episode 25. It was all fun and games in the drama. There wasn’t anything serious, it was just comedy, I had a good laugh. But then from around episode 25 till the last episode, things got messy. They started getting serious with the storyline. They introduced the villain, which was cool because he had a good backstory. But the problem was the involvement of fate. I’m not going to pretend like I understood everything there.
The story was messy because they were trying to fit all the information in the remaining episodes. It was too much to digest especially when the drama itself was comedy from the get go. So now they feed you something serious and you wonder where is that coming from. The whole fate thing and the talk about the chosen one… was a no no for me. I think they ruined the story with that. And they did say that the story will continue, meaning there will be a second season. But I don’t think that I’ll have time to watch the second season.
Conclusion
Anyways this is just my review on Pull Strings. I can only recommend this drama if you’re looking for something light or want to watch something fun. With that being said, I’m rating pull strings, 5 out of 10.
